Hello r/askhistorians! I'm looking for help for a research project and was hoping you guys can help point me in the right direction for research. I'm currently looking for books or articles that explain and identify the beginning of the modern state within Renaissance era. I'm aware of the Treaty of Westphalia but I'm looking for more information retaining to the actual establishment of a state .

My favorites are:

  • Jan Glete, "War and the state in early modern Europe: Spain, the Dutch Republic and Sweden as fiscal-military states, 1500-1600," ISBN-13: 978-0415226455, 2001.

  • Bartolomé Yun-Casalilla, et al., "The Rise of Fiscal States: A Global History, 1500-1914," ISBN-13: 978-1107521278, 2015

Try a more general history such as the Oxford Early Modern Europe (2001). Its bibliography should provide your next steps.

Also if you are in university try booking research time with the main library usually they can provide someone to help with research assistance as well.
