Were people in the Dark Ages aware that they were living in a particularly dark period of European history?

Well no, mostly because the Dark Ages weren't all that bad: academic historians don't really use that term at all anymore and some historians have postulated that it was actually the best time to be alive (if you were an ordinary peasant) before the 20th century. I've written about this before here, here and, most recently and in the most depth, here. If you've any further questions on the term, however, feel free to ask them here.

u/miles_sine_castrum. You happy now, bot-man?

Read the Inheritance of Rome by Chris Wickham. Its a great book that "illuminates" the Dark ages.
