I am trying to look for historical records of who worked on the Panama Canal and work they were specifically apart of. I know my grandfather worked as an engineer on the locking systems for the canal, but don't even know where to start to try and find the documentation of his work or if it is even available. If this is not the right subreddit - please feel free to let me know and I will attempt to ask elsewhere! Thanks historians!
A good place to start is a great book about the building of the canal by David McCullough - "Path Between The Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal, 1870-1914"
Written in the late 70s it is quite detailed about the actual construction and political process, and it does talk about the companies and people involved. Written almost as a textbook the bibliography in the back would be a good place to begin.
