Hoover was demonized by the newspapers throughout his tenure. During the march of the Bonus Army, Hoover used his executive power to send in the troops to put down the "rebellion." I put that word in quotation as it was no rebellion, but former soldiers, veterans, demanding their bonus promised to them after service during WWI. The troops opened fire and then burned down the homes of the veterans at Anacosta Flats, Washington D.C. His major political opponent at the time was Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was a staunch critic of his economic policies, as seen by the New Deal.
Those same newspapers that demonized Hoover, praised Roosevelt, especially Eleanore. A famous phrase published was that "Hoover sent the army, Roosevelt sent his wife."
In commenting on Coolidge, he was a political genius, very much denied this right. His predecessor, Harding was implicated in many scandals, thanks to his friends from Ohio, the Ohio Gang, that were given political position (spoils system - Andrew Jackson - to the victor goes the spoils). This gang were most notably responsible for the Teapot Dome Scandal, that was a main facilitator in destroying the image of Harding, however Coolidge (the V.P) was a masterful side stepper and was able to distance himself from such scandals.
