Have Soviet/Russian forces ever directly attacked Americans (and vice versa)?

by newguy57

The US and Russia (formerly USSR) have been at odds for many decades now, mainly through proxy wars though. Has there ever been an incident where US forces or Russian forces directly attacked one another? Have there been close calls or accidents? Or is it true that "not a single bullet" has been fired.

I have a follow-up question:

From a previous thread in AskHistorians, I was directed to a Wikipedia page (link) about the Battle over Nis, supposedly happening in 1944 when an American P-38 squadron mistakenly attacked a Soviet ground formation, provoking a Soviet air response before things were cleared up. However, the 1st source is a picture book, the 2nd is a nice report with no discernable sources behind it, and the 3rd (the Russian source) is borked. I couldn't find any additional information that didn't point back to the Wiki article. Could anyone weight in with any real sources and whether this ever happened?
