When did sticking the middle finger out become a sign of disrespect in American culture?

In the book "Whisper of the River" by Ferroll Sams, the main character is given the finger by another character and has no idea what it means. This book was set in the 1930s, but understand that the main character is a naive college student who up to that point in the book hasn't displayed much worldliness. Also, this is a work of fiction - albeit based on the author's personal experiences from that time period.
