I'm currently studying to become a high school history teacher. With a recent surge in interest in World War I (thanks largely to the popularity of Battlefield 1) I've been looking for a piece of pop culture that far more accurately depicts the first world war.
Many films such as Gallipoli and Paths of Glory are great movies but their accuracy is questionable at times (though they are quite a step up from Battlefield 1) So what films (or shows) stand out as well researched and accurate depictions of the Great War?
Beneath Hill 60 gives a very good, and unique as far as cinema is concerned, account of the tunnel war waged beneath the Western Front. The story itself is intermixed with the backstory and love story of the main character Oliver Woodward but it's a very good movie none the less.
Im not sure how 'accurate' it is, given that I wasnt there, but Ive always appreciated the battle scenes from the 1930 version of All Quiet on the Western Front. I really enjoy the texture of the film, as you have to figure that many of the film's staff had either firsthand experience, or knew someone who did. At that time, the the war was still in living memory, and the film must have tapped into that for not just its plot and direction, but the set design, blocking, and even costuming.
