What is our history of interactions and ideas surrounding the discovery of fossils found in coal beds?

by smokesinquantity

I'm writing a paper for an invertebrate paleontology course and my paper is going to be based on the fossils found in coal beds. What they are, how they got there, and our history with them. I know humans have had contact with coal in Britain for quite a while and our views on history and evolution have changed frequently. What I need from all of you is some information and sources on human interactions with coal bed fossils over time.

This policy is further explained in this META Thread.

Additionally, while our users may be able to help you out here, we hope that you also will take the time to check out our six-part series, "Finding and Understanding Sources", which should hopefully prove to be helpful for you as you continue in your research.
