I'd just been pondering this question, if any of our forces just skipped Japanese installations on islands that we didn't find important enough in the Pacific theater. And if this is true in any case, does anyone know what happened to those forces and/or bases after the war?
Yes, often. The two most notable would be Truk and Rabaul. Both were MAJOR hubs and bases for Japan. However other less well defended places could meet US needs. Therefore both were left to wither on the vine. They both got worked over heavily by allied airpower too that neutered any potential they had to be thornes in their side as well. Often aircrew new to the front also would fly missions over these places in order to season them at lower risk.
Truk is one of the finest natural harbors on earth and as the primary IJN forward base was called the Japanese Pearl Harbor. While Rabaul was the lynchpin of Japanese power in the Solomon islands.
Thus starvation, disease, brutality, and hopelessness became the order of the day on cutoff bases. With some even resorting to canibalism to survive. Wake island also got similar treatment.
