I know this is kind of tangentially related to history, but I was curious: how is the name Hitler properly pronounced? It's one of those things that bothers me for some reason - when people pronounce names in a manner that those people would not have pronounced it (such as people pronouncing Van Gogh as "Van Go"). I just feel like names should be pronounced as the people, themselves, pronounced it, because that was their name.
So, I know people in America pronounce the name "HIT-LER," but if I recall correctly, the surname was just a rare spelling of the more common last name "Hiedler." So, was his name properly pronounced "HIDE-LER?" The two sound pretty different from each other.
If this was the wrong place to ask this, lemme know!
The proper pronunciation in German is pretty close to the English pronunciation as "Hit-ler" or if you want the phonetic spelling according to the IPA it is "hɪtlɛr" though it depends on you regional dialect (northern or southern German) if the "ɛr" is pronounced with a rolled "r" or with an "er" sound that turns into an "a" a la "ər" in letter.
Be aware though, as with any internationally known person, some languages don't have the sound to pronounce the name as it is pronounced in German in this case leading e.g. to Slavig languages speaking of "Gitler" or "Chitler" because that is the closest they can come to its pronunciation.
