How much did the American public know about nuclear weapons prior to Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

I know there were places in Vegas where you could view the testing, but were the bombs common knowledge in American households? And did they expect them to actually be used?

Nuclear weapons were part of popular culture in a science fiction and speculative science way prior to Hiroshima, but the actual ones were kept fairly secret. They were deliberately not opened up to public debate. The testing in the Las Vegas did not start until 1951, six years after Hiroshima. I think you have your timeline a little confused — the bomb was essentially a secret until Hiroshima.
