How did people catch serial killers in the medieval ages?

by Oriachim

Was it all based on suspicion and eye witness reports? I know that they didn't have the means to collect DNA or fingerprints but otherwise I'm oblivious when it comes to detective work.

I know that werewolves were supposedly invented due to people finding dead bodies but was this common?

As a follow up question - were there any serial killers we know of in the middle ages? Or is this sort of crime a modern phenomenon?
