I just watched the episode of GoT where they show "the battle of the bastards" and it got me thinking...
Were medieval battles more or less one big clusterfuck when it all got down to it? And also, did many armies often kill their own men by accident?
Soon after the Battle Of The Bastards episode aired, there was unsurprisingly lots of interest in asking historians here how the battle in that episode compared to real medieval battles. In particular, there was lots of interesting discussion as a reply to this question post, including this excellent post by /u/valkine on how it compares to medieval battles and this post by /u/iphikrates suggesting the inspiration for some of the moves in the battle come from the Ancient Greek historian Xenophon.
