Hi All,
So my grandfather found this coin while working the docks in Perth, Western Australia, about 50 years ago. It's been in a shoe box ever since and they've never bothered to research what it is. Does anyone have any ideas? Is it the kind of thing a museum might be interested in? I'm especially interested in any context surrounding the time of production.
Thanks in advance.
I could do more with better resolution pictures. The obverse is pretty clearly inscribed "Faustina" and I think "Augusta." Faustina the elder was the wife of Antonius Pius, and her daughter Faustina the younger, was the wife of Marcus Aurelius. Both have a number of series of coins in existence (here and here for instance).
The reverse seems to be in such bad condition I don't even know what to do with it. Might be able to find a match of the obverse die by itself if you want to take the time to look through coins with "Faustina Augusta" legends.
You might try https://www.reddit.com/r/numismatics/ - they've helped me identify some coins in pretty bad shape.
You may want to consider posting this on /r/whatisthisthing as they may be better able to identify the coin.
Could you post a picture of the other side of the coin?
