Please, if anyone would be so kind, I am requesting help in identifying what kind of military unit this is. The man in the center left with the mustache is my great grandfather. Unfortunately, we do not have any information about his military career. All we have is this picture and one other (a portrait.) We do know that this was taken in Germany some time around the 1900's or 1910's before coming to America, but that is about it.

Judging from his uniform and the little bit I have gathered from Google, I think he may have been part of the cavalry, but I have nothing else to base that assumption on. Any and all help would be most appreciated.

I did a little research, and by the looks of it he may have been a German Hussar. http://www.kaisersbunker.com/gtp/husar.htm The elaborate piping of his pre-war "Attila" tunic is a dead giveaway, as apposed to the more modest uniform of a Ulanen (lancer), f.e: http://www.kaisersbunker.com/gtp/ulan.htm Now, I can't tell exactly what his rank or unit was, but by the looks of it, he was an enlisted man, due to a lack of obvious rank insignia. http://uniforminsignia.org/?option=com_insigniasearch&Itemid=53&result=2185

Hello there! As your question is related to looking for identification/information regarding military personnel, our Guide on Military Identification may be of use to you. It provides a number of different resources, including how to request service records from a number of national agencies around the world, as well as graphical aids to assist in deciphering rank, unit, and other forms of badges or insignia. While the users here may still be able to lend you more assistance, hopefully this will provide a good place to start!
