Why did Peter the great name his city St. Petersburg instead of St. Petersgrad?

Peter admired all things German - to him, German stuff was progress, and his new capital was to be built like a European City, not a Russian one. That's why SPB is built with stone, and not wood.

It makes sense, therefore, that the city would have a German - sounding name.
