Cannon maintenance on a ship?

by andromedakun

Hey there folks,

This video of Lindybeige (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eqs-iVsCyDI) made me curious as how this was possible on a ship.

What I mean by this is that most tools used to clean the cannon seem rather large and the fact that they need to be used from the front seem to make it difficult to use on a ship.

So, how was a cannon used while on a ship? Did they use the stame steps and tools as shown in the video?

Many thanks in advance.

It was essentially the same process.

See, when a cannon fired, it would launch back, providing the crew enough space to move the sponges and what all around. While their's might have been slightly shorter due to the fact that they were on a ship, it was still relatively the same thing.

Of course field artillery crews had more room to move around, but the process of cleaning, loading, and firing a cannon remained on land and on sea.
