How long did prison sentences in medieval Europe usually last? If a common criminal was thrown into a dungeon, how long could they be expected to remain there before and after trials?

As a follow up: were there even prison sentences as we understand them? As far as I know, the options for commoners were mainly either fines or a corporal punishment of some sort. Nobody wanted to keep criminals in special facilities and pay for their upkeep, however inexpensive.

As a follow up question, what were the different dungeons/prisons like for people of different classes or economic backgrounds. I always hear about debtors prisons, etc, but what about rich people or political prisoners?
