In the Animaniacs' Presidents Song, they sing "Jimmy Carter liked campaign trips." What is the historical background of this claim?

by Casiphoner

Did Jimmy Carter ever say "I love campaign trips," or did he just go on a lot of them? Also, were his campaign trips different from his contemporaries and predecessors? If so, how?

Thanks!

PS - Don't know why so many of the deleted comments are saying "It says camping trips." The song clearly says "Campaign Trips."

Carter came out of nowhere in the Dem Primaries of 76. Being from Georgia, he was dismissed as a regional candidate and he wasn't as popular as McGovern who was the 72 Democratic nominee also from the South. But, Jimmy Carter travelled like a motha humpa all throughout the north. He won New Hampshire out of nowhere and media started to pay attention to him. He travelled at least a total of 50,000 miles, covered 37 states and delivered at least 2,000 speeches (http://totallyhistory.com/jimmy-carter/) got to states before his opponents even announced. He set the bar for traveling during the Democratic primaries that year.
