Why was Imperial (20th century) Japan so relatively benign in Taiwan, compared to its other colonial acquisitions?

Imperial Japan's atrocities and brutality in Mainland China, Korea, Philippines, etc seem completely different to the way they operated in Taiwan during their rule there. What was different about Taiwan?

During the beginning of Japan's colonial ambitions, Taiwan was meant to serve as a "model colony" and as the cornerstone of Japan's "Coprosperity Sphere". Japan focused much more on industrialization, development, and assimilation as a means of advertising the benefits of being a colony.
