How were highly successful Soviet athletes (Olympic medalists, world champions, etc.) rewarded by their government, and is it similar to the way modern day ultra-successful Chinese athletes are rewarded by their own government?

I watched a documentary today about the glory successful Chinese athletes posses in their home country and the torture they're willing to endure to get to the top. I'm wondering if a similar culture of ultra competitiveness and fame existed in the Soviet Union during its time, and if it's a trend that can be traced across many communist nations.

Hi there! We have approved this question, but I'd just like to ask any respondents to keep in mind that /r/AskHistorians has a no current events policy. Responses should focus on Soviet athleticism and its dynamics rather than on modern Chinese circumstances.

Thanks!
