Why are coins always circular?

by rastadreadlion

In this clip from Game of Thrones we see a coin from Braavos that is square shaped. I've never heard of a coin shaped as anything except a circle. Can anyone shed some light on this pressing and important issue?

Coins were not always round. This is an answer to a similar question, where myself and u/daqafwz talk about non-round coins in Japan and China.

There were oval, rectangular and square coins in Japan, and spade shaped and knife shaped coins in ancient China.

(Interestingly the Chinese non-round coins were ancient, but the Japanese non-round coins only date from the 1500s, and followed periods which used round coins and also the barter system.)
