Hi, all.
With the Comey firing there have been a lot of comparisons to the (Saturday, Oct. 20, 1973) Saturday Night Massacre, but many young people know little or nothing about this historical reference.
I am hoping you can provide either a link to a good, short summary of the event, or else write such a summary.
I'd like to post this (or one of you to post it, and I can repost) to Facebook, for people like my 22-year-old daughter who cares a lot about politics but isn't particularly well informed about recent history. I'm pretty sure that there was some occasion when I happened to broadly outline the Massacre as part of describing Nixon's fall, but I doubt she retained much/any of it.
I read, for example, "What was the Saturday Night Massacre?," and it may be what I'm looking for. For example, I learned that the guy who ultimately fired Cox was none other than Robert Bork, who of course was nominated to the Supreme Court by Ronald Reagan (in 1987) and rejected by the Senate. Unfortunately, the webpage is a mess of Flash and advertising, to the extent that it is very slow to scroll.
BTW, I am Gen X, born in 1971, too young to remember the Massacre but fairly well aware of it; I do remember the Bork nomination and rejection.
This question qualifies under this subbreddit's prohibition of post-1997 questions, but it is recent enough that another subreddit such as /r/Ask_Politics might be more appropriate.
Thank you for any help, and apologies if my question is inappropriate for this subreddit.
There's a mega-thread on U.S. Presidents and the Department of Justice ongoing right now, and here is a specific link to the question of the Saturday Night Massacre.
