What happened to the genre of comedy in Europe after Antiquity?

by bumchala

Why don't we ever hear of a comedy written in the 11th century? What was the 'funny' kind of literature produced in Western Europe produced after 476 but before the Renaissance?

Unsurprisingly, Europeans kept on writing funny things. There was whole genre of poems full of things like country bumpkins pretending to be fancy, rich people pretending to be smart, and other funny social elements like that, which is sometimes called Elegiac comedy. These were written in Latin, in the 12th and 13th century, and part of what makes them funny aside from the social satire is that they use fancy poetic forms but have silly, mundane subjects. Some of them ended up adapted by writers like Chaucer, who is very funny and much better known than those Latin poets.
