How come there were no dinosaur discoveries before 1676?

by allthepigsfeet

Are they always buried deep? Surely someone found something before the first recorded discovery? Romans dug tunnels all over large parts of the world m, did they find nothing?

Edit- every post seems to be removed, and I don't know why?

I've read that it was dinosaur fossils that actually inspired the dragon myths. Can anyone versed in this subject confirm or deny this?

I don't know if this is allowed as a post, but I'll give you my interpretation. I'm a paleontologist, and dinosaur bones in the ground do NOT resemble the dinosaur bones we see in museums. Simply put, it takes a lot of training to recognize fossil bones and excavate them while keeping them intact. They blend into the surrounding rock and are often highly fragmentary. It's hard to accidentally find dinosaur remains unless you really know what you're looking for and are just digging through lots of sedimentary rock - which is only exposed in remote areas that don't tend to be densely inhabited.

Only the most remarkable fossils resemble bones in the ground, and even then it's still incredibly difficult to excavate them. I'm not surprised it took a long time for fossil skeletons to be documented.
