Declaration of Independence was not a revolutionary document?

by amber-gail

Hello, I am looking for some sources for my homework assignment. I have tried google and my textbook says nothing about it. The question is "Show ways in which this was not a revolutionary document." (The Declaration of Independence). If someone could help, it would be greatly appreciated!

It looks as though The Constitutional Origins of the American Revolution (2011), by Jack P. Greene, might cover what you need.

Another angle is to place it within the philosophical tradition and show it as a progression of (among others) the British* (*caveats skipped over) philosophical tradition and seeing it as a progression from the English civil war etc. John Locke would be one major influence for example.

As far as sources, assuming you don't want to be splashing out for a homework assignment try the Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy. Start with Jefferson, Locke, see what you can find (I'm not sure how deep you're supposed to be going). Or look for the phrases that pop up (natural law, inalienable rights, etc)

The internet encyclopaedia of philosophy might also be a useful free resource.
