I've been fairly interested in learning about the Teutonic Order recently, and from all the representations I've found, it sees that the Knights of the order always have some form of horns or other ghastly protrusions from their greathelms. I'm used to seeing crests or tassels, but I've never seen these. What are they, and why do all the Teutonic Knights have them?
I would like to add the question: the teutonic knights are portrayed almost exclusively heavily armored, plate and all. Besides the horns and accompanying apparel, how wide was the teutonic army heavily armored?
Were they heavier armored than contemporary knights? Were the heavy knights a big or small part of the teutonic army? How was the rest of the army typically armored?
