How come ruins are mostly found buried underground?

by MushMi

I have no idea if this is the right subreddit, but here goes.

So a little explanation..

What are reasons that constructions from ages ago are always buried underground and found during excavations etc? I can understand plant growth and such, but 5 meters below the surface we often find old buildings. I'm quite fascinated as how it ends up like that..
