Can I ask what you mean by "most religions"? Regular washing is not only permitted it's a requirement in Islam, but did not stop the plague from being just as if not more devastating in the Islamic world (partly because of higher degrees of urbanization, partly because the notion of fleeing to the countryside didn't really exist the way that it came to in some parts of Europe.)
