In the recent visit that Trump, Melania and their daughter Ivanka made to Vatican City State, we were able to see mother and daughter wearing black, as only Catholic queens are allowed to wear white while in a visit to the Pope. What are the origins of this tradition and why was it created?

Further to OP's question, have there ever been any serious implications for that rule being flouted in the past? Or is it just 'frowned upon'?

As another add on: Are/were there any rules to how Kings should dress? Or would their normal court attire be enough?

Another question is how does one earn the title "Catholic queen" I googled it but nothing came up.

Hello everyone,

If you are a first time visitor, welcome! This thread is trending high right now and getting a lot of attention, but it is important to remember those upvotes represent interest in the question itself, and it can often take time for a good answer to be written. The mission of /r/AskHistorians is to provide users with in-depth and comprehensive responses, and our rules are intended to facilitate that purpose. We remove comments which don't follow them for reasons including unfounded speculation, shallowness, and of course, inaccuracy. Making comments asking about the removed comments simply compounds this issue. So please, before you try your hand at posting, check out the rules, as we don't want to have to warn you further.

Of course, we know that it can be frustrating to come in here from your frontpage or /r/all and see only [removed], but we ask for your patience and understanding. Great content is produced on this subreddit every day though, and we hope that while you wait, you will check out places they are featured, including Twitter, the Sunday Digest, the Monthly "Best Of" feature, and now, Facebook. It is very rare that a decent answer doesn't result in due time, so please do come check back on this thread in a few hours. If you think you might forget, send a Private Message to the Remind-Me bot, and it will ensure you don't!

Finally, while we always appreciate feedback, it is unfair to the OP to further derail this thread with META conversation, so if anyone has further questions or concerns, I would ask that they be directed to modmail, or a META thread. Thank you!

We also are aware that OP made a minor error in Ivanka's parentage with their title, but it has no actual bearing on the premise of the question, so we don't need a half-dozen comments pointing it out. Thank you!

Edit: Hey guys, we would love to see an answer as much as you all, and thank you for your patience. For the curious, I had a free moment to do a quick tally of the removed comments for y'all! Of the 53 comments in the thread at this time, 38 are top level. Of those, 35 are removed, leaving this Mod Comment and Two 'Follow-Up' Questions. The breakdown of removed comments is the following:

  • 11 comments are pointing out that Melania is Ivanka's stepmother not her biological mother. This had already been addressed in the Stickied Mod comment, so you really don't need to point it out. See out Clutter Rule.
  • 5 removed comments were additional follow-ups deemed either redundant to the existing ones or too current politically. We do allow follow-ups, but still police them.
  • 8 removed comments were simply asking why comments are removed. Again, see the clutter rule.
  • 4 comments attempted to make the semblance of an answer, but none were longer than 2 sentences. See rule on depth and comprehensiveness.
  • 4 comments were simply linking to a Wikipedia page. See our rule on links, and also sources.
  • 1 comment was removed because it copied from the Wikipedia page without even acknowledging that fact. See our rule on plagiarism.
  • 2 comments were calling in the Remind Me Bot. We love that people use it, but please do via PM in the future y'all!
