In this film "We Were Soldiers", Joe Galloway is given a rifle which he later uses against the enemy. Did this actually happen, and are there any more verified accounts of embedded journalists being forced to use a weapon in the heat of battle?

I can't answer the larger question, but I can speak to Galloway. In the book on which the film is based, Galloway is clear that he didn't have to be given a rifle: he had picked one up earlier while at a Special Forces camp under siege and kept it. The Galloway of book and reality seems to have been more of a cowboy than in the movie.
