Hi guys!! I'm trying to find out a bit more about my great grandfather, especially what role he had in WWI. I have pics with him on his uniform, but cannot post them here, so I'll add a link below with them. It confuses me because one of his uniforms looks like the uniform of a medic, but another one looks like the one of a rifleman.
His name was Francesco Covino, born in Italy, in the town of Pescopagano circa 1900.
PICS:
Any information would be helpful. Please let me know if this question should be done in a different subreddit.
Hi ! I actually have a great-grandfather who fought with the Italians in WWI as well, and posted a question about it here that didn't get any traction either. r/Genealogy was suggested to me and I only got a little information to go on from there. Basically what you want to do is contact the provincial archives, every region has one and you're more likely to find records about deployment/enlistment from there since Italy did not have a very centralized bureaucracy at the turn of the century. I'm not familiar where Pescopagano is, so you'll have to find out under what municipality and region it's administered. To give an example my g-grandfather was born in Atri, which is in the province of Teramo which is in the region of Abruzzo.
Also quick note, I believe that the last draftee class that was called up by the Italians during the war were those born in 1899, If your great-grandfather was born in 1900 there's a good chance he might not have served in the war itself, but rather the post-war military.
This link here http://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/italian-genealogy/15162 helped point me in the right direction
And if you're curious about the response I got (also a shameless plug if anyone can answer my question), here is the link to my post in r/Genealogy https://www.reddit.com/r/Genealogy/comments/5icjcf/where_to_find_italian_military_or_employment/
In any case good luck!
