I have read in many places, about the theory of the "invisible ships" and the shore inhabitants, where "... their highly filtered perceptions couldn't register what was happening, and they literally failed to 'see' the ships." (Quoting here from JZ Knight's What the Bleep Do We Know?)
You'll be interested in my previous answer to this question. The short answer is yes, you could. What the Bleep is wildly misrepresenting an incident that is completely unrelated to Columbus' encounter with Native Americans. This bogus tale is inspired by an encounter Cook had with Aboriginal Australians, during which the Australians seemed to ignore the approach of Cook and The Endeavor. Of course, there's more too it than that and the Australians were aware of the approaching ship (for the most part; based on the written account some were too engrossed in their own work to notice the ship, but others certainly saw it). You can read about the whole incident in the link.
