So we all know that the Anglo-Saxons invaded what is modern day England many many years ago, but my question is that is that should we consider Old English more Danish or German? The Anglo tribes came from the very Northern part of Germany but primarily from the center of Denmark. I think Old English looks more like Danish rather than German. I would like to hear a historians opinion on this.
This is more of a linguistic question, but English and German are both West Germanic languages, while Danish is a North Germanic language. So, English is closer to German than Danish. In fact, Low German is, next to Frisian, one of the closest languages to English, as all three are part of the Ingvaeonic subset of West Germanic languages.
