I'm researching family history and one line of text caught my eye. In dutch it reads, "Hij was mogelijk één van de bannelingen die in 1671 in Venetië als slaven te werk werden gesteld." The man in question was a farmer in Erlenbach, Switzerland born in 1601. If it matters, he was also accused of being a tauffer or Anabaptist.
I know about the Swiss Peasant uprising but that was about twenty years earlier. He was fathering children before, during and after that upheaval.
I'm struggling to make sense of this information. Is it even remotely possible that he could have been conscripted in some way to work galleys in the Morean War?
The information comes from Kwartierstaat van Anje van Til; "Ancestral history of Barbara (Weber/Weaver) Gander, wife of Peter Gander" (P); "Archiv des Historischen Vereins des Kantons Bern", Volume 63; "De familie Kneubel: doopsgezinde landverhuizers uit Zwitserland naar Nederland en later naar Amerika" van Harry Berg ("Gens Nostra", september 2016, nummer 9)
Hello! I know there aren't any relies here, but curious, since I myself have been doing some ancestral research and found a very similar history. With almost the same wording, would you be researching a "Hans Lötscher" ? In which case, please let me know if you have anymore findings!
