May we please revive this inquiry? I've got the same question. See, if someone in the ancient world handed me the task of designing a vessel to haul stuff by the tens of millions...garden to cart...cart to ship...across the Med...back to cart... finally to home or tavern, a conical base is the LAST shape I'd propose. What was up with that? Surely the success of that design has significance.
