A friend who is a historian said this is true through most of the Roman empire's history the other day. And it disturbed me.
On a related note I once heard Dan Carlin talk about medieval peasants and he claimed that due to religious holidays they only worked 3-4 days out of the week. Is this true and can anyone give more information on this? Also what did peasant farmers do for work in the winter?
