Is it true that Montezuma believed Hernan Cortes was Quetzalcoatl reincarnated?

by Minkovich

This sounds like an urban legend, but this is seriously what I learned in my college U.S. history class. Apparently, the Aztecs were so welcoming of the Spanish conquistadors at first because Montezuma saw Hernan Cortes and genuinely believed him to be the human reincarnation of his favorite god, Quetzalcoatl. The appearance of the Europeans was apparently consistent with what he believed Quetzalcoatl would look like, and thus they trusted the European colonists. This seems like a huge and unlikely stretch to me, so is there actually evidence to support this, or is it just a myth that was invented to make history sound more interesting?
