For the Cold War history buffs out there, I'm looking for what's among the best/top resources of a comprehensive, historical overview of the Cold War. Any books come to mind? Thanks in advance!
Walter LaFeber’s America, Russia and the Cold War, 1945-2006 is a good introduction and often assigned in undergraduate classes. LaFaber is fairly critical of U.S. foreign policy, a position know as “revisionism.”
John Lewis Gaddis’ The Cold War: A New History is also a useful one volume history. Gaddis sees American foreign policy as a justified response to Soviet aggression. This position is usually called “post-revisionism.”
If you want to go beyond the focus on the United States and the Soviet Union I’d suggest Odd Arne Westad’s The Global Cold War: Third World Interventions and the Making of Our Times. The book does an excellent job of making clear that many nations had agendas that were more complicated than loyalty to either the US or the USSR.
