When did customers start to expect bags for their purchased items?

(For this question, I am ignoring the new trend of bringing reusable bags to the store.)

When I watch shows or movies set long ago, the people at market carry bags or baskets for the things tbey are purchasing. Now, with the exception of one store (Aldi's is the one store I know, there may be more), customers expect that the store will have free bags for them.

When/Why did this happen? Was it a form of advertising?

The icon below my questions shows that there is one response, but I can't see it. All that shows up is the "Wow much empty" statement.

Anyway, I realized that I should have stated this is in the US. I've never had the opportunity to travel abroad so I realize that it may be different in other countries.

Anyone out there have any thoughts?
