I'm working on a project about the communist leader of Albania, Enver Hoxha. There appears to be very little English-language information about him, other than Enver Hoxha: The Iron Fist of Albania by Blendi Fevziu, which, as you can tell by the review, is extremely biased against him. Other than that, I have found his own work, which is obviously probably biased in an entirely different direction.
Are there any historians whose specialty is studying communist Albania that I should use as resources?
Albania's 20th century or really generally post-Ottoman history is a seriously understudied subject, from the kingdom and Italian period to WWII and the occupation to the rule of Hoxha and the communists. It seems to draw more ridicule and curiosity (the Bunkers!) than it seems to draw academic interest. One of the main problems, of course, is that almost no one speaks Albanian or has the intention to learn it, so most of what is out there is either books from detractors like Fevziu or books from fellow travelers and fans of Hoxha rule like James S. O'Donnell's A coming of age. Albania under Enver Hoxha. or similar.
What I would recommend is to widen your search a bit: The early phase of Hoxha's rule and politics are usually discussed as an aside to Yugoslavia's post war policies such as the Tito-Stalin split in 1948 because the Albanian partisans and communists were very closely linked to the Yugoslavs and for the later period, there is some literature discussing the Sino-Albanian alliance after Hoxha's falling out with the Soviets and falling in with the Maoists in China.
For the former subject, it might pay off to check out Ivo Banac With Stalin against Tito: Cominformist Splits in Yugoslav Communism, 1988, while for the later, there is Elez Biberaj: Albania And China: A Study Of An Unequal Alliance 1986 though the latter is from the same publishing house as O'Donnell above, meaning probably taken with a grain of salt.
Because Hoxhaism was quite popular in Ethiopia during their civil war, it might also pay off to check out some of the pertinent literature on them, specifically the Marxist-Leninst League of Tigray.
Generally, I'd recommend to comb through the footnotes in these books and see what you come up with to get a better picture of Hoxha. It's not the easy way but Albania is unfortunately a not very well researched topic.
Hello there. Your question seems to be related to school work, so we just want to remind you, and any potential respondents, that our rules DO permit people to ask for help with their homework, so long as they are seeking clarification or resources, rather than the answer itself. This policy is further explained in this META Thread.
Additionally, while our users may be able to help you out here, we hope that you also will take the time to check out our six-part series, "Finding and Understanding Sources", which should hopefully prove to be helpful for you as you continue in your research.
