Was D-Day the first time American and German soldiers fought in WW2?

Definitely not. In November 1942, American and British soldiers landed in French North Africa, but did not immediately encounter Germans, though they did have to fight Vichy French collaborators. American and German soldiers first met in combat during the advance on Tunis later that month. After the advance stalled due to poor logistics, bad terrain, and tenacious German and Italian resistance, the Axis mounted a major counter-offensive against Kasserine Pass in late February 1943, which succeeded in inflicting thousands of casualties and embarrassing the US Army, but failed to alter the strategic situation.
