Looking at a map of Israel, I noticed that it has a city on the Red Sea, Eilat. I was wondering why Israel has that small coastline there, and how long that was part of Israel.
It's been part of the modern State of Israel since its inception - it was assigned to Israel in the initial 1947 partition plan. As for why, the idea is that Israel would be assigned the sparsely-populated areas, including the Negev desert, so that they would have room for new immigrants. (Eilat wasn't really a city in 1947.)
