Since this is not my area, I am only aware of Arthur Waldron's From War to Nationalism: China’s Turning Point 1924-1925 as a monograph devoted entirely to the era, but many of the authoritative general history references like Jonathan Spence's The Search for Modern China also goes into the topic.
