90th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Troop E)

by cadeh614

I am reading a book called "The Tigers of Bastogne" by Michael Collins. It mentions Combat Command B of the 10th Armored Division a lot. I looked at the units attached to Combat Comand B but I could not find Troop E of the 90th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. So, I thought the Troop must be attached to Combat Command A. Can anyone verify this or tell me what Combat Command Troop E was attached to ?

According to FM 2-30, dated 28 August 1944, E Troop would have been the assault gun troop, equipped with M8 75mm Howitzer Motor Carriage. The Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron of an Armored Division had 4 Reconnaissance Troops (A-D), an Assault Gun Troop (E), and a Tank Company (F). In US cavalry units, squadrons are battalion sized, and troops are company sized elements.

The After Action Reports for 90 CRS are available here. The squadron had been split into two squadrons: 90th CRS(-) and a "Provisional Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mecz)", the latter consisting of A Troop, C Troop, E Troop (minus 1st and 2nd platoons), and 1st platoon of F Company. The Provisional squadron was assigned to CCA, with the 90th assigned to CCB.

On 28 November 1944, the squadron was reunited near Ritzing for rest and rehabilitation, with the troops rotated off the line. On 30 November, the squadron launched an attack near Tunsdorf towards Nohn. Unfortunately, there is a gap in the After Action Report for the squadron as a whole, and it doesn't pick back up until 1 January. E Troop may have been assigned to CCA, possibly CCR (although 10th tended to concentrate everything in CC A and B), or the squadron could, as the Division's reconnaissance element, been operating independently of any Combat Command.
