I've heard it said that the European tradition of drums as instruments came originally from cultural diffusion from Africa relatively late into human settlement there. Is there any veracity to that statement?

Snare drums(with sticks) are dated back to 1300's in Europe. Field music consisting of snare drums & flutes date back to the 1500's. I think the flute was spread throughout western Europe, in military use, by Swiss and German mercenaries during this century.

I believe snare drums were introduced in medieval Europe from various eastern countries by returning crusaders. There are a few different variations of the drum, originating in ancient civilisations such as Egypt and Assyria.

I think the practice of field music would have been maturing during the colonization of Africa.

I'm fairly sure humans settled in Africa long before we did in Europe, so I don't think your premise makes sense.
