Looking to gain knowledge starting with The Pilgrims up to Independence from Britain.

I'll toss out four of my favorites...

Mayflower is excellent for the Pilgrim era.

1776 was an enjoyable read of the Revolutionary War era.

American Slavery, American Freedom was good for the institution of slavery.

And Albion's Seed was an intriguing look at how four separate cultures merged into US culture from early on.

Here's a list of books focused on American history I've enjoyed. Some are more designed for mass consumption and some are monographs.

A great cultural history book that provides a good base of information (albeit, definitely with an angle) is American Nations by Colin Woodard.

An amazing work on American environmental history is Cadillac Desert: The American West and Its Disappearing Water.

Land of Promise by Michael Lind provides a sweeping, basic account of US economic history, but definitely also with a point to prove.

White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America is excellent.

Empires in the Sun: The Rise of the New American West is a great account of developmental history.

One of my very favorite books is The Age of Edison: Electric Light and the Invention of Modern America by Dr Ernest Freeberg. Written by a professor of American cultural history but easily accessible to non-historians, it was one of the best books I've ever read.

Landslide: Ronald Reagan and LBJ at the Dawn of a New America was a great read.

The Victory Lab by Sasha Issenberg is an excellent history of American political campaigning.

The Frontier of Leisure by Dr Lawrence Culver and Ski Style: Sport and Culture in the Rockies by Coleman are also good.

The Birth of the Pill by Eig is a great cultural history of birth control, female empowerment, and sex politics.

While I could keep going, I'll stop with Crabgrass Frontier: The Suburbanization of America by Kenneth Jackson, which is probably the seminal work on American urban development trends since the late 19th century.

Definitely check out Middlekauff's Glorious Cause, from the Oxford History of the U.S. It's very readable and informative. In fact, the run from Glorious Cause up through Battlecry of Freedom may be my favorite historical series.
