I don't know if I have to provide sources for such a short comment, but I know it's believed that having ten digits on each hand greatly aided the widespread adoption of the decimal system. The Oksapmin people of New guinea use more of their body for counting in their base twenty seven system, and the names of numbers all correspond directly to one of these body parts. The thumb of one hand is one for example.
