I was working on location for a photo shoot in a very nice house in the suburbs of Chicago. Down one hallway was this framed American flag: http://imgur.com/a/9t7UW I want to know if it truly is an authentic piece of American History, or if it is a replica. Or perhaps it's from a different time period altogether! Let me know what you think r/AskHistorians!
No. American flags from the eighteenth century are exceedingly rare and it's still debatable if any 13-star flags have survived from the Revolutionary period at all. To put it in perspective, the American flag had 15 stars and 15 stripes from 1795 to 1818, and maybe three to five 15-star examples from that 23 year period are known to exist today. And they don't look anywhere near as pristine as the flag in your photo.
This article from American flag expert Jeff Bridgman goes into more detail on antique 13 star flags.
