Any suggestions for detailed books about legal and/or jurisprudence history from Rome to early America?

More specifically, how certain rights and legal concepts came to be developed, the logistics of of early legal systems, their design and operations. In more laymens terms, just a interesting book about legal history and the evolution thereof. Thank you very much.

Roman Law: An Historical Introduction is a good first text, which takes you through the Roman period straight up to early contemporary Europe. However, you should be aware that American jurisprudence is mostly based on English common law, which is a different beast (and of course Louisiana is based on the Napoleonic Code).
